Sperm and Embryo Cryopreservation

Funding from both NHMRC and NCRIS allows us to offer mouse cryopreservation service for less than the actual cost. For strains that are in the public domain, i.e. published, or available to other researchers the cost listed below is available.

To encourage cryopreservation of unpublished strains a 2 year embargo is permitted on listing on the APB database and distribution to others. At the completion of the 2 years the embargo must be lifted or the depositor must pay for the full cryopreservation costs plus maintenance fee as outlined in the second table below.

The ongoing maintenance costs, e.g. liquid nitrogen, are also supported.

The depositor will need to pay for shipping of the mice to the APB node and the caging of the mice and breeding of mice to produce donor animals, if required.

Support does not cover

Costs to researcher:

Cryopreservaton

Sperm

Embryo

Basic fee*

$350

$0

Caging at cryo facility*

$0

Depends on strain.

Estimate, uncomplicated strain: 20 cages x 18 weeks - $2916 (+GST).

Quality control*

Subjective microscopy analysis test thaw - $0
IVF + Embryo transfer to pup - $800/strain (+ GST)

One validation to live pups - $0

Animal Requirements:

5 males, 10-16 weeks of age.

For strains on C57BL/6 background 14 - 20 weeks of age.

The facility does not need to receive all 5 animals from the same strain at the same time.

4 males & 8 females to establish a breeding colony to provide embryo donors (7 - 9 weeks of age)

Where is cryopreservation conducted?

Monash University or
Australian Phenomics Facility (ANU)

Animal Resource Centre (Perth)

Both cryopreservation services are requested through and organized by the APB Curator. The researcher does not need to do anything other than supply strain and animal information and ensure the mice arrive at the cryopreservation site on time on the specified date.

Re-animation from frozen material service

Where

ANU or Monash University
IVF or Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

(ICSI is available at Monash University only).

All centres.
If embryos were frozen down at ARC they will be re-animated at ARC.

Cost*

$1,500 per session (+ GST), + cage costs for weaned pups

(does not include genotyping, health screen or shipping costs)

Purchase frozen straws to re-animate at facility of your choice: $400 for 3x straws (+ GST)

from $1925 (incl GST) (includes up to 4 thaw and transfer sessions)

For those strains that are not freely distributable depositors will be charged for the cryopreservation, on going maintenance (a yearly fee) and for shipment.

Cryopreservation* $750 per strain (5 mice) (+ GST)

$2650 (incl GST) (includes up to 10 freezing sessions)

+ cage costs (depends on strain, average is $1,000)

Quality Control*

IVF + Embryo transfer to pup - $800/strain (+ GST)

Test thaw and incubation to blastocyst stage - $165/strain

Yearly maintenance fee*

$100 per strain (+ GST) $136.50 (incl GST)
